Art Appraisal

Why do you need a professional appraisal of the fine art and personal property you own?

Professional appraisal reports are prepared with a thorough inspection of the object, a determination of its condition, along with research into provenance and analysis of current market data into sales and auction records.   The professional judgment to value provided in our appraisals gives important information for sales, proper insurance coverage, equitable distribution, tax donation and heritage records.

What is involved in an appraisal?

The appraisal process includes a thorough inspection of the property by a certified appraiser.  Artworks and objects are conservatively and carefully examined for condition, stylistic characteristics, artist’s techniques and marks, which are evaluated to consider their attributes of value.   Objects are measured, photographed and cataloged for inclusion in the formal appraisal report.

What is a formal Appraisal Report?

A formal Appraisal Report provides clients with an opinion of value of the property being appraised based on the appraiser’s professional judgment.  The appraisal report is a detailed description of the process the appraiser uses in estimating the stated value. After careful inspection of the art or personal property, the appraiser collects market data that is analyzed by accepted professional appraisal methods. The methods for appraisal report writing are based on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) of the Appraisal Foundation, which hold appraisers to provide competent and ethical reporting to insure the economic well being of clients and public institutions.

All reports are prepared in accordance with USPAP, are comprehensive and valuation conclusions are based competent and ethical procedures.  Typically the reports provide a narrative that includes factual descriptions of the object(s), data analysis and the appraiser’s opinions based on the systematic analysis of the purpose of the appraisal, market conditions and appropriateness of the data.  All limitations such as geographic, physical and legal, highest and best use, along with reasonable market time, are introduced and evaluated to reach the final value opinion.  Details in our appraisal reports assist our customers in making informed decisions for selling, insuring and controlling objects in their collections.
